Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

The Championships court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Players will gain the ability to challenge certain calls from the official, following the system already in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move arrives only a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been unsure if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
