The White House disclosed the start of government employee layoffs on Friday, making good on prior threats linked to the ongoing federal funding lapse, which is set to extend into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

Russell Vought wrote on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the government’s process for terminating staff.

Although the official provided no details on which departments were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that layoff warnings had been issued within that department. Additionally, a DHS representative noted that staff reductions would also occur at the CISA. Also, a labor organization representing federal workers confirmed that employees at the Education Department would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Union leaders warned that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on services used by millions of Americans and pledged to challenge the actions in the legal system.
