Approximately fifty vehicles have been marked with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Cars, walls and postal boxes were marked, sometimes with swastikas, they stated in a release.
Officers say they were notified during the night on Wednesday night, when a resident observed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued liquid.
The fluid had been drawn in the pattern of a swastika, they reported.
Officers then located numerous other marked cars and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under laws outlawing the public display of Nazi symbols.
Officials state preliminary tests show the substance was probably human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no lead as to its source; authorities are presently not informed of any injuries in relation with the incident," they stated.
Local authorities said they were trying "to unravel the case" and have asked to the residents for tips.
A senior representative stated the incident rendered him speechless and had to be solved promptly.
"This event hits the center of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the extremist terrorist attack half a decade ago," he stated on a platform, referring to the death of nine people by a gunman targeting people of immigrant origin in February 2020.
