A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” affirmed the country's president.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his government's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised persistent concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party called for an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This pause was suggested pending a full technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."
In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these strategic projects.
