Sudden Shift in Forecasts

Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be removed from office by the end of January rose in the period preceding President Donald Trump announced on January 3rd that Maduro had been seized.

Odds Fluctuate Before Public Statement

But the odds had climbed to over 10% by late Friday night and skyrocketed in the first hours of January 3rd, pointing to a sharp shift in betting activity right before the public announcement was made.

"This specific wager has all the signs of a transaction based on non-public details," said an industry expert.

A small number of other platform users also profited significant sums from predicting the capture.

Political Attention Intensifies

Politicians are beginning to pay attention.

A new rule put forward on recently seeks to ban government employees from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a market.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Prediction markets faced scrutiny under the last presidential term. However it has experienced less resistance during the Trump presidency.
